Do you get stuck at an emotional level that does not feel like you? Maybe it isn’t you. If you understand the Reactive Mind (sometimes thought of as the subconscious mind) and what an engram is you may be able to ‘shake’ that feeling:

“Emotional charges may be contained in any engram: the emotion communicates, in the same tone level, from the personnel around the ‘unconscious person’ into his reactive mind. Anger goes into an engram as anger, apathy as apathy, shame as shame. Whatever people have felt emotionally around an ‘unconscious’ person should be found in the engram which resulted from the incident.”

“The only thing wrong with a mind is a mind. I’ll go over that again. The only thing wrong with a mind is a mind. That is all that is wrong with it: it is. Because it’s so rigged up that every action an individual undertakes, every action undertaken is then held in suspense. Everything he’s done bad and done wrong is held in suspense to the end of time.

And somebody talks about karma. They’re talking about, without knowing what they were talking about, this series of pictures retained by the mind. All the pain and agony of yesterday can be carried in this mind and can be turned on again against the individual. This mind may have use. Who knows? But for sure it has liability. It has kickback. It is a sort of a trap. An individual is never free of his acts of yesterday. Well, maybe this is desirable in the other fellow, but it’s not too desirable in you, is it?

Retribution, the mind, conscience, guilt, restraint. And this would be all very well, providing anybody could prove that an unrestrained being is always damaging. And yet in processing we find out that the more we do for somebody, the easier he is on his fellow man and it’s only those people who are totally plowed into these minds who commit crimes, are criminals, lead countries. . . Only such people as are totally trapped with no hope of ever getting out are reactively engaged in the commission of crimes.”

from the article “The Only Thing Wrong with the Mind”
by L Ron Hubbard

The book Dianetics was written in 1950 describing how the mind works with procedures (processing) so that a person could remember the past experiences without having them affect him or her adversely. This way a person could now act and think without being unknowingly affected by the reactive mind*.

“Do not think that you will not make patients uncomfortable. That is not true. The auditor’s* work, when it taps engrams* which cannot be lifted, may cause the patient to have headaches, various aches and pains and even mild physical illness, even when the work is carefully done. But life has been doing this to the patient on a much grander scale for years and, no matter how badly the case is mauled around, no matter how many aberrations* spring into view to plague the patient for a day or two, none are as serious as those which can be occasioned by the environment acting upon the untapped engram*.”

Many would like you to believe that child misbehavior is complex and inevitable. Being impatient with your child and not letting him or her contribute will as sure as anything drive them into rebellion. You will likely remember your child wanting to help but you were in too much of a hurry to allow it – they are small and learning – it is your job to let them. And let them own some things!

“If you think of somebody you hate, you can probably remember a time when you tried to help him or a man like him. Your hatred, actually, is based on the fact that you flopped. You failed you and you failed him.

“When you were a little kid so high, you wanted to help Mama and Daddy. Fine, you wanted to help them, you wanted to get a big job, you wanted…After a while you started getting unreal and exaggerated, you no longer brought Mommy the dishcloth, and so forth, you started to get exaggerated, you said ‘How can I make 800 billion pounds and buy them limousines?’ You see, you were getting desperate by that time. But possibly any of you could remember such a response towards your parents.

“And then after a while you decided you couldn’t do a thing about it. And that is the basis of teenage negation of family. The child has decided he can do nothing about it.

“Now if that child also decides that he cannot help society or any section of it, you have a delinquent on your hands—if the child decides that. He has to know that he can help. And as long as he knows that he can help, he’ll stay in communication and stay right. But when he feels he can no longer help, he starts blowing up. There goes his life.”

If you ask 100 parents how to raise a child you will likely get 100 different opinions. My sister said that you can tell someone about their religion or you can tell someone about their politics but never, ever try and tell someone about their children! Here is a great quote from Ron Hubbard on one important aspect of a parents’ responsibility in raising a child:

“If a child is driven frantic by anything, it is parents to whom he can contribute nothing or parents who take everything away from him. And these two things make up, in the final aggregate, aberration…”
